Desert Brew Music |
| Mixed down versions of your recordings are listed below. I didn't
bother listening to the versions that the other guy did or even to the
originals. I mixed it according to what I perceived the music was
telling me. I've been told that my work has a "live" feel to
it as opposed to the compressed and polished sound on the radio today. I
guess that's a good thing. It better be because I can't help it.
I have not listened to these songs anywhere but on my studio monitors. The songs still need to be checked on other speakers, but that's more fine tuning than anything else. I also have some ear fatigue, so I'll give them a fresh listen in a couple of days to see what pops out. "I'm a Believer" - I left out one of the vocal tracks because it was way off. It sounds better without it. Tried to work some magic on the keys. He probably recorded them straight out of the keyboard, which will sound different than what you get through an amp and speaker. "I'm a Believer with Jim on Bass" - I just had to lay down a bass track for this song. The bass in this song is quite deceiving - it's really kind of tricky and bouncy - and fun to play. No way is Swampcooler doing "I'm a Believer" so I decided to give it a whirl just for kicks. "Who's Cheatin' Who" - Never heard this song before, so it was definitely a matter of what the music said to me. "Crazy" - Never heard this one befor either. Did some EQ on both guitars to try get a bit more twang. "Long Cool Woman" - This one was a problem. If you ever have somebody record you again, never ever let them record vocals from the drummer while he's playing. It sounded like the engineer used a condenser mic with the drummer set up near a wall. The vocal track had way too much drums in it. I did the best I could. "Mustang Sally" - Tried to work some magic on keys again. The back up vocals were apparently done with a retake. I had to manually align them within the song since these tracks did not start at the same time as the others. I guess the guy didn't know how to properly export the files. "Pretty Woman" - This one was the easiest. However, it sounds like there's some phasing from the drum overhead mics (listen to the ride cymbals). "Take It Easy" - Same manual alignment issue as with Mustang Sally only this time it was a retake on the guitar. Also if you ever record again, try not to record the guitar with reverb. That should be added later when mixing so it matches the rest of the song. And never, ever let somebody record the tambourine along with a vocal track. You can't raise or lower one without doing the other.
