Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of mileage are you guys getting?
Fully loaded the Tomato Wagon is getting about 21 MPG. That's pretty good if you ask me! Diesel fuel is running $1.17 - $1.30 per gallon, which is much cheaper than back home! The engine is relatively new and we are using Castrol Syntec - we haven't lost a drop of oil yet!!

What are you guys eating?
Breakfast is usually coffee, fresh fruit (nectarines and apples), and breakfast bars. Lunch is usually sandwiches (deli meats like turkey, ham or roast beef), Baked Lays® or pretzels, and some more fruit. Dinner usually varies. Since we only have two burners on the stove, our selections are somewhat limited. Sometimes we have breakfast foods like pancakes or French toast and eggs. We've also had Cheesy Tuna Helper, soft tacos, grilled cheese with soup, and even linguine with turkey sausage! We usually have a late night snack of cereal or peanut butter and jelly saltines!

What does Buck do when you guys are out and about?
Buck stays in the Den. He shares one bed (here is the floor plan) with the food crate, cooler, radio and computer. He usually sleeps while we are gone. He gets at least three walks per day, so he is usually tired. It stays cool in the Den. We are usually in the shade and the Den provides its own shade as well. We keep it well ventilated. By the way, he loves riding in the car. He gets the equivalent of one passenger seat in the back. Sometimes he just sits there and looks out the front window. Other times he hangs his head out the side window. About half the time he lays down and sleeps.

Are you insanely bored?
No.

What do you miss the most?
Marci: Mami and Dadi, a bathroom across the hall, talking to my friends, pizza delivery, cable TV, the Redskins, and the anxiety of a full-time job (tee hee)
Jim: Orange Chicken at Shen Yang, sleeping on the couch, the sound of the trains, coaching little league football, a proper gym for working out, and, of course, my family and friends.

Do you two fight a lot?
Sorry, we can't agree on answer for this one.

What is the worst thing about the trip?
We both agree that waking up in the middle of the night having to pee is simply the worst! Running a close second is having to clean up after Buck poops in front of someone else's campsite! He seems to be quite an exhibitionist - he likes to do it in front of crowds.

Have you learned anything new about each other?
Marci: I learned that Jim has sissy feet! He won't walk around in bare feet at all. He hates having dirt on his feet or between his toes. He even lotions his feet at night!!
Jim: I'm pleasantly surprised to find that Marci is quite adept at backing up the trailer!

What have you liked the most so far?
Marci: That I have had no time limits...I haven't felt rushed. I am also glad to find that Jim doesn't snore in the great outdoors like he did in the great indoors! I like all the pretty places we've seen far that I never would have seen had we not taken off. I also liked eating a lobster!
Jim: I've come to realize that I really love lakes. Rivers are nice as are mountains and beaches, but give me a lake any day! I also enjoy comparing the culture to what I'm used to. I find other ways of life fascinating.

How do you decide where to go next?
We look at the road atlas and campground directory, figure out how far we feel like driving, then pick a place and go! It's really not all that scientific. We very much play it by ear.
