Day 49 - Thursday, September 3, 1997

San-Suz-Ed, West Glacier, Montana - Yippee!! We're finally at Glacier National Park. It was a heck of a drive getting up here. The folks here in Montana have a funny idea of road construction. What they do is tear up a whole section of the two-lane highway - perhaps 2-4 miles of it. It is on the road bed they expect you to drive. That's right, we would do miles at a time on little more than gravel and dirt. In one section it was so bad that we had to wait 15 minutes until a "Pilot Vehicle" finished leading a line of cars from the other direction. This "Pilot Vehicle" is really just a pick-up truck driven by a construction worker. The driver in this case was female, which comes as no surprise since about 1/3 of the construction workers out here seem to be female.

In another stretch of road a flag-woman stopped us and asked Jim if he would deliver a flag to the flag-woman at the other end of the construction area. Jim agreed and carried the flag on his lap for about four miles, then handed it to the appreciative construction worker!! How many times in this life will you see a bald guy driving an orange Mercedes with two bikes on top and a pop-up trailer behind it stop and hand a construction worker a flag? What a sight!

When we arrived at the campground late in the afternoon, no one was in the office, but there was a chocolate lab there to greet us. Mort is a squat little dog. His head is much bigger than Buck's, but his legs are about half as long. He looks like the dog with the human head from Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the remake). It seems poor Mort suffered from Parvo as a pup, which affected his growth. It certainly didn't affect his disposition as he is a gentle if somewhat timid dog. He and Buck seem to get along well having peeing contests. Jim tried to join in but the other campers complained.
