Day 46 - Monday, September 1, 1997Rafter-J Bar Ranch Campground, Hill City, South Dakota - The campground cleared out big time today, which made us glad we decided to stay here another night. Mountain roads and herds of RVs are not a good mix!! Besides, we wanted to get the oil changed before heading to Glacier. This evening as we went to the hot tub to warm our bones from the cold overcast day, we saw another couple in the tub. She was reading a book aloud to her husband. As we got closer we realized she was speaking German. The book was Ken Follet's Pillars of Strength/Power (we weren't sure the exact translation). At first she was embarassed and asked if we wanted her to stop. We didn't. It was fun catching bits and pieces we understood. As the evening wore on we found out that the lovely Katya and her husband, Marcus, were from the northeast part of Germany. They are in the States on a three week vacation. They were on the way back to Minnesota after seeing Yellowstone, which impressed them greatly. They like America though they find the store-bought food to be somewhat expensive compared to Germany. In another observation they noted that in Germany many people are simply a little overweight. But in the USA they notice that we are far more extreme with very large people and very thin fit people. What an interesting thing to notice. We spent most of the evening chatting with our new friends and a couple from Indiana, who explained to us how the bales of hay are made. Apparently little Hay Fairies come at night and bundle the grass with their special magic. You learn something new every day, don't ya?
