Day 39 - Monday, August 25, 1997

KOA Sioux City North, Sioux City, South Dakota - We tried to get in touch with my friend Ernie in Nebrask, but were still unable to hook up. Poor Ernie was tied up with problems at work. Maybe we will see him when we pass this way again.

We intended to go for a bike ride along the Big Sioux river, but ended up visiting Stone State Park in Iowa instead. This park has trails that lead to scenic overlooks. We could see clear into South Dakota. It's hard to tell how many miles we could see, but suffice it to say we think we spotted China.

We also visited Turtle Lake, which is inside the park. We did not see any turtles. We were going to ask for our money back, but realized we got in for free!! On the way to the lake we were suddenly attacked by skeeters! It was amazing. One minute we were fine, the next we were surrounded by these little bloodsuckers. Fortunately Jim had some Off in his backpack, so we were soon on our way again.

Back at camp we met up with an older couple from Westminster, Maryland. They are on the same path as we are in that they are heading towards the Badlands, Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore. We will probably see them again.
