Day 35 - Thursday, August 21, 1997

Shakopee View Campground, Shakopee, Minnesota - We haven't mentioned this yet, but Buck has had an eye infection for a few weeks. We figured it would clear up on its own once the stress of the trip wore off. Well, Buck has adjusted very well, but the infection didn't clear up. You see, he has had a cyst on his eye for many years now, but it has never really been a problem. We suspected that perhaps now it was causing the infection. So we took him to a vet recommended by the campground owner, a dog lover herself. Upon closer examination, we found that the cyst had grown a new protrusion that has been irritating his eye. We all agreed that it had to be removed, so we put Buck in for surgery. The operation went well, and Buck is resting comfortably.

While Buck was at the vet, we took a ride on the Shakopee-Chaska bike trail. This scenic ride along the Minnesota river included stops next to an old brick kiln, limestone kiln, and brewery. These stone structures from the 19th century included signs explaining what was once there. It was highly educational. Did you know that they burn limestone to remove the carbon dioxide and thus make lime? And to think we thought limes grew on trees!

Unfortunately we were not able to ride into Chaska. The bridge across the Minnesota river was washed out in the flood, so we couldn't cross. There was another path we could have taken, but it was still under water from the heavy rains earlier this week. So we rode home.

Back at camp we took everything out of The Den and cleaned it up good. It really needed it. We've hit rain in Maryland, Connecticut, Mass, Maine, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Things really needed airing out!! We've been on the road for over a month now, so things did need cleaning anyway. Needless to say The Den has lost that New Car Smell.

When we hit the whirlpool this evening, Marci had a funny little accident. In one hand she had her towel, book, wallet, and change of clothes. In the other hand she had a deck chair. As she walked by the whirlpool, she stepped on the edge - and slipped! She flipped sideways and on to her back landing right in the hot tub!! She didn't let go of a thing, including the chair!! Fortunately she was not hurt, but everything was soaked. The people in the pool got a good laugh. Marci was very embarrassed.
