Lake Lauderdale Campground, Cambridge, New York -
We left the heated pool at Getaway Mountain and took off for Cambridge, NY. Obviously we made it!! Today we visited the Shushan Covered Bridge Museum, which is literally a covered bridge that is now a museum. It's very small and all of the items are donated by local residents who have been around for years.
The docent was about 800 years old with teeth to match! She was very friendly and well-informed. We were going to ask her how she knew so much about how the antiques worked until we realized she was around when they were new! She stayed with us the whole time since we were the only visitors then (and possibly for the whole day). She was able to answer a very important question about covered bridges: Why are they covered? The answer? To protect the wood that makes up the bridge!
Next to the covered bridge as an old one-room school house that was in operation from 1853 to 1947. It was furnished with original equipment, including desks and a wood stove. They even had a map of the USA from 1859. Can you believe that Rockville was among the three cities shown for Maryland? Annapolis and Baltimore were the other two.
In 1981 they brought back former teachers for a reunion. Of course, they were so old they didn't know why they were there, but in the pictures they looked like they were having fun!
Later on we took a bike ride from Lake Lauderdale down to Cambridge. We stopped by the Central School, which appears to house all 12 grades. It was a pretty big school! During our ride we stopped at a produce stand for a fruit break. We even got to ride through some manure. Oh, what fun!
