Katahdin Shadows Campground, Medway, Maine - We drove to Millinocket (just outside of Baxter State Park) to go on a pontoon boat ride on Lake Millinocket, where we hoped to spot some moose (or is it
mooses? or meese?). Unfortunately the 2:00 run was canceled due to a lack of passengers. So we hung around the dock watching the ducks. While we were there we thought we saw a head poking up out of the water about 50 yards out. We kept watching it get closer and closer. Eventually we realized it really was a head. Fortunately it was attached to a body and not the dreaded Psychic Severed Head about which we'd heard many stories. The head made it to the dock, hoisted his shoulders out and asked "White Cliffs of Dover?" We both pointed east and he swam away again.
We drove back to the campground to go for a bike ride, but it started raining. So we hung out and read our books. Since the weather was lousy, we decided to skip the 6:30 boat ride. Eventually it did clear up, so we took off on our bikes. We found a public beach on a nearby lake. We decided we would ride back to camp, pick up Buck, and return to frolic in the water. However, before we left, Jim wanted to take a ride over the
bridge which spans the lake (he hates bridges and heights). Needless to say, Jim made it.
After we got back to camp (and Jim changed his underwear), we took Buck down the lake to play around. He doesn't like to swim unless we're out there swimming. The water was too cold for us to swim, so we tried to coax him out with pretzels. He went as deep as he could go without actually having to swim. What a
whimp!!
We ended the evening with a toasty campfire and guitar playing and singing.
