Redwood Empire Fairgounds - Ukiah, California We drove the Avenue of the Giants today, a scenic bypass through the Redwoods. We took a two and a half mile hike through these massive behemoths. Well, the trees are about the same size as those in the Hoh Rainforest. What stands out is that this is a normal-looking forest except that every tree is really big. Occasionally we would come across a tree that had fallen, and we could see a hole in the forest canopy that tree once reached for the sun. Oddly enough we stumbled across a very small species of bird, maybe two inches tall. You'd think that in a forest with such big trees there would be big birds. But apparently big birds are only found on Sesame Street.

The campground we're staying in is actually a fairground right next to the race track making it one of our more unusual stops. This campground is strange in that the bathrooms are closed from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I guess we'll be sleeping with our legs crossed tonight.
