Day 109 - Monday, November 3, 1997

Mad River RV Resort - Arcata, California - As we were driving down US 101 Jim read in our Road Trip USA book about the eclectic little town of Arcata, home of Humboldt University. With seconds (okay, minutes) to spare, we located a campground and pulled off the road.

We spent the rest of the day walking around the small town of Arcata, which we soon nicknamed Land of the Misfits. Humboldt University and Arcata make up kind of a modern day hippie village. However, it seems the people coming to Arcata now are hippie-wannabees. The best way to fit in is to wear old, dirty clothes, let your hair grow long without the benefit of shampoo, and read a lot of books.

We had lunch at one of the dozen or so little cafes in town (we skipped the one with the private outdoor hot tubs) where we watched numerous VW Bugs with "Skateboarding is Not a Crime" bumper stickers drive by. This is the first place we've eaten where sprouts were an option on our sandwiches. Welcome to California.
